- Organization: develop & use systems to track information or materials.
- Planning & time management: create steps to reach a goal.
The above skills are in a constant state of growth throughout childhood & adolescence. Depression, ADHD, Schizophrenia, trauma, and other mental health afflictions will affect executive function skills.
There are all sorts of mental health professionals to help your child manage their mental health: Therapist, Psychiatrist, Psychologist. Many collaborate together for the benefit of your child.
Should I see a Psychiatrist or Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner?
- Of those listed, they are the only mental health professionals who can prescribe medication. A lot of education and training is required to prescribe medication safely, and therefore child psychiatrists are in very high demand.
- Their approaches may vary – some might be very holistic (diet, exercise, etc.) in their approach while others may be more focused on finding the right medication.
- While some do provide supportive therapy (we do at NYCP), in most cases your child will need another, therapist or psychologist, for weekly therapy in addition.
- An evaluation is based on the child's history, interviews and screen tools for proper diagnosis.
- We can diagnose ADHD, depression, anxiety, problems related to hearing or seeing things others cannot, stuck thought patterns, etc.
Or a psychologist if:
- Your child might have a condition that affects his learning or neurology, such as ADHD, a learning disorder, or autism spectrum disorder. Psychologists are able to conduct many tests that others do not.
- Your child needs support to manage emotional or behavior problems
- You would like a more detailed diagnosis for your child, and a full picture of all the factors that might influence your child’s mental health
- One of your goals for therapy is to determine what changes your school can make to better support your child.
- Need a diagnosis... Psychologists can diagnose as well.
A Therapist may be the right choice for your child if you are looking for:
- Emotional support for your child or someone to talk to about their feelings
- how to develop coping strategies for anxiety, depression, anger, or big life changes
- Determining how to improve relationships (within the family or outside) & improve challenging behaviors
- You’re not looking for help medication management
